Regular well-child exams are an important part of keeping kids healthy and up to date on immunizations against many serious childhood diseases. Checkups also are a chance for you and the doctor to talk about developmental and safety issues, and for you to get answers to any questions about your child’s overall health. At a typical well-child visit, your child will be weighed and measured and these results will be plotted on growth charts for weight, height, and body mass index (BMI). Using these charts, doctors can see how kids are growing compared with other kids the same age and gender. The doctor will take a family and medical history and do a physical exam. Your child may be screened for anemia, lead poisoning, tuberculosis, high cholesterol, or other conditions. The doctor also will ask about your child’s eating habits. The doctor will make sure all immunizations are up to date.

Your child should also get the flu vaccine every year, ideally before flu season begins. Other vaccines might be needed if the doctor determines that your child is at risk for conditions like meningococcal or pneumococcal disease. The doctor will check your child’s developmental progress, asking about behavior and specific developmental milestones. Doctors also give a screening test to help identify developmental delays and autism at the 24- or 30-month visit. Child safety is another topic discussed at well-child visits. The doctor will talk about the importance of using car seats, closely watching kids around swimming pools, preventing poisoning, not smoking around kids, and using sunscreen. In homes with guns, weapons and ammunition should be stored separately and kept locked at all times. When Should I Call the Doctor? Some symptoms can be signs of an infection, chronic medical condition, or other medical problem. Young children have an average of 6 to 8 colds a year, and also may have several bouts of diarrhea and vomiting, as well as ear infections. Sleep problems and behavior or discipline concerns are very common at this age and can be frustrating for parents. Your doctor can offer guidance to help you manage these issues too.

Happy Father’s Day — but maybe hold the celebratory double-cheeseburger and fries. In advance of the special day Sunday, the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation is dispensing a little fatherly advice: your kids are what you eat. According to a 2016 study published in the International Journal of Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity fatherly eating habits were one of the biggest influences over whether children grow up to be overweight or obese. The father-son relationship outweighed that of mother and son as a determinant of future health, even when mom was doing most of the food preparation, according to Wayne Hartrick, president of the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation. Healthy family relationships also had a positive link to healthy eating. In looking at 6,300 individuals from 14 to 24 years old, researchers found that, particularly among males, those with a strong, positive relationship with their fathers had less likelihood of being overweight or obese. Another study published in 2011 in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior suggests that children are more likely to pick up eating behaviours from their fathers than their mothers. Researchers found that children were much more likely to choose fast-food restaurants if their fathers grabbed takeout on a regular basis. There are a range of theories, Hartrick said, as to why dads appear to have such sway over their children’s eating habits. For dads feeling a little concerned that their daily cheeseburger habit could be having an adverse effect on the kids, Hartrick said, the good news is that positive change isn’t difficult to make. Incorporate it in ways that are realistic and easy to do: park your car at the other end of the parking lots and walk. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Have three to five glasses of water per day instead of sugar-loaded pop.

This Zucchini Chocolate Chip Baked Oatmeal is a perfect way to use up your summer garden zucchini. Your kids will be begging you to make it over and over again! I’m the kind of mom who thinks that if I can add vegetables in unsuspecting places like breakfast or dessert, I’m winning. There’s no shame in eating vegetables in different forms. If anyone ever tries to shame you for doing so, hold your head high. You’re not trying to trick your kids. You’re doing the best you can to maximize the nutrition they get via the meals you serve them. Simple as that. The more vegetables, the better. There’s as much room on our kids’ plates for somewhat hidden, shredded veggies as there is for raw vegetables or roasted vegetables or steamed vegetables that aren’t disguised in the least. Let’s rethink vegetables and how we serve them to our kids.

No judgement, just more vegetables. Speaking of new ways to serve vegetables, who says vegetables and chocolate don’t go together? When I make these Double Chocolate Peanut Butter Muffins made with 1 cup of vegetables inside, my kids will beg to differ with you. I say, embrace it. Embrace eating vegetables in whatever form you can. This Zucchini Chocolate Chip Baked Oatmeal is a perfect example of how you can squeeze some extra veggies into your kids’ day in a healthful, delicious way. My kids eat and love a lot of different vegetables, but zucchini isn’t normally one of them. They will sometimes eat them raw, but they don’t enjoy the texture of cooked zucchini. Trust me, I’ve prepared zucchini for them many different ways, and baking it into a breakfast treat is by far their favorite. This Zucchini Chocolate Chip Baked Oatmeal has a soft, creamy texture. You will barely notice the zucchini among the melted chocolate chips. The chocolate chips make this plenty sweet, so it only needs a touch more maple syrup. The result is a divine breakfast you’re kids will probably beg you to make over and over! I hope your family enjoys this as much as mine has.
