If you have high blood pressure, you can help lower it by making small changes in how you live. You should work with your doctor to develop a plan for lowering your blood pressure. Part of the plan may also include taking medicine to lower your blood pressure. But your lifestyle changes will be equally important. How do tobacco products affect blood pressure? The nicotine in cigarettes and other tobacco products causes your blood vessels to constrict and your heart to beat faster. This temporarily raises your blood pressure. If you quit smoking or using other tobacco products you can lower your blood pressure. Stopping tobacco significantly lowers your risk of heart disease and heart attack, as well. What about losing weight and exercising? If you’re overweight, losing weight usually helps lower blood pressure. Regular exercise is a good way to lose weight. It also seems to lower high blood pressure even if you don’t lose weight.

Not everyone is affected by sodium, but sodium can increase blood pressure in some people. Most Americans who have a healthy blood pressure should limit the sodium in their diet to 2,300 mg per day. African Americans, older adults, and people who have high blood pressure should limit the sodium in their diet to 1,500 mg per day. Your doctor may tell you to limit your sodium even more. To lower your sodium intake, don’t add salt to your food. Check food labels for sodium. Some foods, such as potato chips, obviously have a lot of sodium. But you may not realize how much sodium is in food like bread, canned vegetables, soups, and cheese. Also be aware that some medicines contain sodium. Do I need to quit drinking alcohol? In some people, alcohol causes blood pressure to rise quite a lot. In other people, it doesn’t.

If you drink alcohol, limit it to no more than 1 drink per day for women or 2 drinks per day for men. One drink is a can of beer, a glass of wine (4-5 oz.), or 1 shot (jigger) of liquor. If your blood pressure increases when you drink alcohol, it’s best to not drink any alcohol. Does stress affect my blood pressure? Stress may affect blood pressure. To help combat the effects of stress, try relaxation techniques or biofeedback. These things work best when used at least once a day. Ask your family doctor for advice. How can I know if changing my lifestyle is helping? One of the best ways to know if what you are doing is working is to see for yourself. Consider buying a home blood pressure monitor. Use it to see whether what you are doing is lowering your blood pressure numbers. Ask your doctor to recommend a monitor. Not lowering your blood pressure puts you at higher risk for certain diseases. What are the symptoms of high blood pressure? What is considered normal blood pressure? Can I lower my blood pressure through lifestyle changes alone? What are the side effects of blood pressure medicine?

July 23, 2019 – Mountain Family Health Centers physician Chris Tonozzi, MD, recently offered suggestions on how other healthcare providers can overcome EHR challenges, improve clinical efficiency, and boost provider satisfaction. In a recent Post Independent op-ed, Tonozzi described his organization’s recent EHR upgrade and outlined the difficulties of adjusting to new processes and EHR functionality. “We spent two half-days in training and slowed our schedules so that we had time to adapt to the changes the upgrade will bring,” Tonozzi wrote of Mountain Family Health Centers’ upgrade. “Safety concerns are becoming an increasing concern related to EHRs,” wrote Tonozzi. While EHR technology has introduced clinicians to new problems, digitization is inevitable. “Our goals at Mountain Family have been to minimize the burden of the EHR and to improve the efficiency of the system whenever possible,” said Tonozzi. “This includes making active efforts to make good use of the data that is generated from the EHR,” he added. One example of Mountain Family’s efforts to optimize EHR data lie in its quality improvement goals. Mountain Family’s quality improvement goals are based on EHR data, including its hypertension control rates, diabetes control rates, and tobacco cessation counseling rates.

“We also regularly coach clinical staff on the connection between their EHR data input and the desired quality outcomes,” Tonozzi said. Clinician engagement is key to improving provider satisfaction with EHR technology. Ensuring providers have adequate EHR training and have the option to provide input to inform certain system configurations such as workflow design can help to greatly improve provider perceptions of technology. “Finally, during the EHR upgrade this summer we’ve had a team of very dedicated providers, nurses, medical assistants, office staff and IT staff configuring, training and testing,” wrote Tonozzi. EHR training was cited as a top predictor of EHR user satisfaction in a recent KLAS Arch Collaborative clinician survey. Researchers including Julia Adler-Milstein, Christopher A. Longhurst, and others analyzed survey data from the Arch Collaborative from tens of thousands of EHR users to identify the factors that influence whether a user will report higher levels of EHR satisfaction.

Healthy eyes and vision are a critical part of kids’ development. Their eyes should be examined regularly, as many vision problems and eye diseases can be detected and treated early. Be sure to make vision care and eye checks a part of your child’s routine medical care. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who provide comprehensive eye care with medicine and surgery. Pediatric ophthalmologists are doctors who have additional special training to treat kids’ eye problems. Optometrists provide services that may be similar to ophthalmologists, but they don’t perform surgery. Some optometrists specialize in kids’ eye problems. Opticians fit and adjust eyeglasses. Newborns should be checked for general eye health by a pediatrician or family physician in the hospital nursery. High-risk newborns (including premature infants), those with a family history of eye problems, and those with obvious eye irregularities should be examined by an eye doctor. In the first year of life, all infants should be routinely screened for eye health during checkups with their pediatrician or family doctor. Around age 3½, kids should have eye health screenings and visual acuity tests (tests that measure sharpness of vision) with their pediatrician or family doctor.
