July 23, 2019 – Mountain Family Health Centers physician Chris Tonozzi, MD, recently offered suggestions on how other healthcare providers can overcome EHR challenges, improve clinical efficiency, and boost provider satisfaction. In a recent Post Independent op-ed, Tonozzi described his organization’s recent EHR upgrade and outlined the difficulties of adjusting to new processes and EHR functionality. “We spent two half-days in training and slowed our schedules so that we had time to adapt to the changes the upgrade will bring,” Tonozzi wrote of Mountain Family Health Centers’ upgrade. “Safety concerns are becoming an increasing concern related to EHRs,” wrote Tonozzi. While EHR technology has introduced clinicians to new problems, digitization is inevitable. “Our goals at Mountain Family have been to minimize the burden of the EHR and to improve the efficiency of the system whenever possible,” said Tonozzi. “This includes making active efforts to make good use of the data that is generated from the EHR,” he added. One example of Mountain Family’s efforts to optimize EHR data lie in its quality improvement goals. Mountain Family’s quality improvement goals are based on EHR data, including its hypertension control rates, diabetes control rates, and tobacco cessation counseling rates.

“We also regularly coach clinical staff on the connection between their EHR data input and the desired quality outcomes,” Tonozzi said. Clinician engagement is key to improving provider satisfaction with EHR technology.
